RYDER CUP

Zach Johnson’s Pick Six are in.

The U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tuesday revealed the final six players on his 12-man team that will take on Europe from Sept. 29 through Oct. 1 at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club outside of Rome.

Joining the six who automatically qualified through the points system are Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler and Sam Burns.

The American team, also featuring automatic qualifiers Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa and Xander Schauffele, hasn’t won the Ryder Cup on European soil since 1993.

The U.S. team is the defending champion of the biennial event, having won in 2021 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

Koepka, because of his affiliation with LIV Golf, was the most polarizing of the picks, but he finished seventh on the points list, just outside the top six who automatically qualified despite having played in only the major championships.

Koepka missed automatically qualifying by just 29 points thanks to winning the PGA Championship and finishing runner-up at the Masters. Koepka has played in three Ryder Cups, two of them wins.

This is Spieth’s fifth appearance for the U.S. Team.

Morikawa went 3-0-1 in his Ryder Cup debut two years ago at Whistling Straits. Fowler, too, is playing in his fifth Ryder Cup and has been in strong form this year.

Thomas is 6-2-1 in his two previous Ryder Cup appearances, and he’s 4-2 when paired with Spieth.

Johnson’s team will feature four rookies, with Burns being the one captain’s pick who’s making his debut.

The U.S. has won two of the past three Ryder Cups, but Europe has won nine of the past 13 matches and six in a row overseas.
